Block Takeover 2025: Transforming an inner-city block into hub of activity
“It’s a chance for our rangatahi to get out, have some fun, and get to know the people behind the youth organisations here to support them, all in one place, and all for free."

Young Southlanders will bring Youth Week 2025 to a close this Saturday with a free event set to transform an inner-city block into a hub of activity, entertainment, and celebration.
Now in its second year, the Block Takeover 2025 is a collaboration between The Y Southland, Youthline Southland, South Alive, Number 10 Southland Youth One Stop Shop, SIT, Te Rourou One Aotearoa Foundation, and Great South, offering free kai, entertainment, and access to services from a wide range of youth-focused organisations.
South Alive Rangatahi Lead Stacey Materoa said the event was about creating space for young people to have fun while connecting with those who are there to support them.
“It’s a chance for our rangatahi to get out, have some fun, and get to know the people behind the youth organisations here to support them, all in one place, and all for free,” she said.
“This event is all about fostering connection between young people and the organisations that exist to serve Rangatahi in Murihiku.”
The event spans a central city block bordered by Deveron, Esk, and Tay Streets, with activities spread across venues including Invercargill Central Baptist Church (ICBC), Number 10, The Y Southland, and SIT’s Creative Centre.
“The venues will host games, activities, live performances, and interactive experiences, with youth-focused organisations offering information, giveaways, and fun challenges. It’s a chance for rangatahi to connect with support services in an engaging and relaxed environment,” Materoa said.
A passport system will allow young people (aged 12-24) to access free food, but also encourages them to explore each venue, engage with activities, and connect with the many organisations taking part. Completed passports can be entered into a prize draw, with giveaways including a PlayStation 5, Instax camera, Retrobowl vouchers, and a Bluetooth speaker.
The Block Takeover 2025 will kick off at 11am on Saturday 24 May. Young people can access a passport on the day from The Y or ICBC.
