Broad: 'I will work hard for all voices in the city'
"I just want to thank the public of Invercargill that voted for me and trusted me with their one vote that feels very special and a huge honour."
Steve Broad spoke of a feeling of pride and honour after officially being sworn in as the Invercargill City Council’s newest councillor.
Broad was sworn in by Invercargill Mayor Nobby Clark at a community wellbeing committee meeting on Tuesday.
It came just a day after Broad was confirmed as the winner of the by-election following the resignation of Nigel Skelt.
After being sworn in Broad said: “I am feeling very grateful and very privileged and honoured to be here with you all today.
“I just want to thank the public of Invercargill that voted for me and trusted me with their one vote, that feels very special and a huge honour.
“And to those whose votes I didn’t receive, I am dedicated to this role. I will work hard for all the voices in the city.
“Thank you for the honour of serving this community. Thank you.”
While Broad is best known in Southland as a breakfast radio host with More FM Southland the 37-year-old had previously gained a profile as an accomplished singer.
Broad competed in NZ Idol, where he placed third, X-Factor, and Pop’s Ultimate Star.
Prior to working in radio, he was a secondary school teacher.
In the lead-up to the election, Broad told The Tribune he has always been interested in council happenings and has a politics degree.
He actually stood for the Invercargill City Council a decade ago but missed out.
