The Southland Business Chamber says securing the future of the Tiwai Aluminium Smelter, marking a monumental milestone for the region.
The organisation says the agreement, guaranteeing energy supply from three generators until at least 2044, brings unparalleled certainty to the community, staff, and suppliers for the next two decades.
In a statement the Chamber said it was ecstatic for the stability this announcement brings and the positive impact it will have on the wider Southland community.
“This is a momentous occasion for Southland,” said Sheree Carey, CEO of the Southland Business Chamber.
“The certainty provided by this agreement not only secures the future of the Tiwai Aluminium Smelter but also provides a foundation for the entire region to thrive.
“With this announcement, 2024 becomes the defining year that sets the course for Southland’s next 20 years, and we are confident that the future is bright.”
The security of the smelter’s operations has significant implications for Southland’s economy, employment opportunities, and community well-being. It ensures stability for the hard- working staff and suppliers who rely on the smelter for their livelihoods, fostering a sense of confidence and resilience in the region.
As Southland looks towards the future, the Chamber remains committed to supporting initiatives that drive economic growth, sustainability, and prosperity for all residents.
The agreement regarding the Tiwai Aluminium Smelter stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of the Southland community and reaffirms its position as a key player in New Zealand’s industrial landscape.
“We applaud the efforts of all parties involved in securing this agreement and thank them for their dedication to Southland’s prosperity,” added Carey.
“Together, we look forward to a future filled with opportunity, growth, and success for Southland and its residents.”
