It appears to be Appleby, Invercargill-Old Boys and then daylight in Southland’s ILT Premier League club cricket competition as the two clubs continue to lead the way.
Appleby and Invercargill-Old Boys both again banked wins on Saturday with Appleby remaining top of the table, four points ahead of Invercargill-Old Boys.
There is then a 14-point gap to third placed Waikoikoi followed by Marist and Southland Boys’ High School.
Appleby banked a six-wicket win over Southland Boys’ High School on Saturday on the back of another impressive day out by Kieran Lloyd.
Lloyd has been one of the big improvers in Southland cricket in recent years with both bat and ball.
On Saturday it was with the ball where he did the damage taking five for 29 as the pupils were bowled out for just 98 batting first. It would have been far worse if Duncan Tait hadn’t chipped in with his knock of 45.
Jacob Downing also played a key role with the ball for Appleby taking three for eight.
In reply, Lloyd struck 30 from 24 balls opening the batting as Appleby chased down the required runs in the 13th over with six wickets still in hand.
The other ILT Premier League fixture played on Saturday at Waikoikoi was also a low-scoring affair.
Jake Kura took four for 21 for Invercargill-Old Boys to help bowl Waikoikoi out for just 84.
That’s despite Waikoikoi sitting at 74 for three at one point as the country club lost its last seven wickets for just 10 runs.
Invercargill-Old Boys chased down the required target in the 15th over with the loss of two wickets.
Sahil Rana top-scored with 37.
