Invercargill-Old Boys has joined Appleby at the top of the ILT Premier League Southland club cricket points standings.
While Appleby could put the feet up on Saturday with a bye, Invercargill-Old Boys went about knocking over Southland Boys’ High School to claim four competition points on offer.
SBHS won the toss and opted to have a bat at Queens Park and encouragingly opening batter Zach Harrington went about putting together a knock of 86 from 82 balls which included 15 fours.
Harrington was the key figure in pushing the pupils through to a first-innings total of 185 before it lost its final wicket in the 46th over.
Spinner Sam Nicholson was the pick of the Invercargill-Old Boys bowlers claiming five for 16.
Nicholson took the final five wickets to fall in the innings as Southland Boys’ High School slumped from 130 for three to 185 all out.
That would have been worse if it wasn’t for Sam Smaill’s unbeaten 39 from 70 balls.
In reply, Invercargill-Old Boys dominated starting with Sahil Rana and Chris Chase’s opening stand of 95.
Rana was first to be dismissed for 61 which came from just 52 balls. Brayden Thomas then went for 19 and Chase for 50 before Brendan Domigan (24*) and Liam McWilliam (9*) saw Invercargill-Old Boys home with 17 overs to spare.
In the other ILT Premier League fixture played on Saturday Waikoikoi claimed a tight 23-run victory over Marist at Miller St.
Waikoikoi won the toss and opted to have a bat and it was a 119-run stand between Kurt Thompson and Ryan McFaul which set up the total of 201.
Unfortunately for Waikoikoi, they lost Thompson, McFaul, and fellow key batter Jared McKenzie all in the space of just three runs which halted its momentum.
Marist was struggling in its chase at 46 for three but the Miller St boys still did have an ace in its hand in the experienced Shaun Fitzgibbon.
Fitzgibbon chipped in with an unbeaten 65 and had some support around him through the likes of Alec Mathieson (23), but it wasn’t enough.
Marist was bowled out for 178 in the 47th over, 24 runs short of victory.
