Fancy an evening of theatre? Invercargill Repertory have got you sorted
"I saw The Shape of Things in Auckland in 2003 and it had a really lasting effect on me. I wanted my first play to be one that could have a similar effect on someone else."
For Neil McDonald’s directorial debut, The Shape of Things is a heck of a storyline to cut his teeth on.
Written by Neil Labute, The Shape of Things is a curious and thrilling romantic drama set in the early 2000s. You'll be guessing what's really going on after every scene, and wanting to come back to see the signs you missed.
“I saw The Shape of Things in Auckland in 2003 and it had a really lasting effect on me. I wanted my first play to be one that could have a similar effect on someone else,” McDonald said.
The Shape of Things, directed by McDonald, will be performed at Repertory House from November 1st to 4th.
McDonald is no stranger to Southland theatre. Usually on stage, Neil’s white makeup has barely washed off from playing Uncle Fester in Gore Musical Theatre’s Addams Family.
“Being on stage, and working backstage has given me an advantage in directing, and Repertory is a big supportive family, so it feels like I can take this step knowing I’ve got guidance and help when needed.”
Casting is a tall order for The Shape of Things. The role of Adam has been portrayed by Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer, Peaky Blinders), and Paul Rudd (Antman, Anchorman), the role of Evelyn by Rachel Weisz (The Mummy, Constantine) and Danielle Cormack (Wentworth, Xena Warrior Princess).

“The cast is incredible to work with and we have a lot of laughs which makes it easier and very worthwhile,” McDonald said.
