Food, Music, Fishing on offer at On the Fly Festival
“On The Fly isn’t just about fly fishing, it’s a celebration of community, nature, and summer fun."
The banks of the Mataura River will come alive on Sunday February 23 as the “On the Fly Festival” returns to Gore.
This free, family-friendly event runs from 12 noon to 4pm on River Terrace, offering an afternoon filled with entertainment, delicious food, and activities for all ages.
The festival celebrates Gore’s rich tradition of fly fishing and its status as the World Capital of Brown Trout Fishing. With the Mataura River as the backdrop, the festival is a great way to spend a summers day with friends and family.
Attendees can enjoy live performances from talented local artists, including Kayla Mahon and Simon Thompson, the Halton Hart Family Band, and students from Kayla Mahon’s music classes.
Food lovers will be spoiled for choice with offerings from Southland’s finest vendors, including Southland Biltong, Pretzelation, Road Kill Pizza, and Luis Steam Bunz. For those looking to quench their thirst, there will be a beer garden featuring Hopsession Brewing from Invercargill and Hokonui Moonshine cocktails.
Fly-fishing enthusiasts and newcomers can participate in guided demonstrations and workshops led by experts, including a casting lesson by Chris Dore. Plus, our first-ever female fly-fishing guide, Shelen Boyes, is attending to promote fly-fishing among women.
Kids are encouraged to get involved in the free activities on offer such as bouncy castle, mini jeeps, and face painting. Fish & Game will bring two interactive fish tanks—one with 2,000 juvenile fish and will be hosting a “Guess How Many Fish” competition with great prizes. They’ll also run a 45-minute “Kids Have a Go” casting activity called Backyard Bass, offering young anglers a fun introduction to casting.
Event Coordinator Florine Potts describes the festival as a celebration of more than just fly fishing.
“On The Fly isn’t just about fly fishing, it’s a celebration of community, nature, and summer fun.
“Whether you’re coming to give fly fishing a go, enjoy live music and tasty food, or just relax and soak up the sunny vibes, it’s a day for everyone to come together and enjoy a day by the river.”
Dogs are welcome at the festival, provided they remain leashed and under control. Free parking will be available along River Terrace.
The On the Fly Festival is all about celebrating Gore’s awesome community, beautiful surroundings, and love for fly fishing. With free entry, it’s a summer event you won’t want to miss!
