H&J Smith site ruled out as potential museum option
The proposed closure of the H&J Smith department store has prompted speculation as to what that site could be used for in the future.
Invercargill Mayor Nobby Clark has ruled out trying to secure the H&J Smith site for the new museum build if it becomes available.
The H&J Smith Group announced this month that it plans to close its large Invercargill department store in November.
It has operated in the heart of the city’s CBD for over 100 years.
The proposed closure has prompted speculation as to what that site could be used for in the future.
Some have suggested it would make a prime location for the new museum in Invercargill, with the view the museum on that site would further enhance the inner-city vibrancy.
