Heart of the City: Flames on Esk set to 'dazzle and delight'
The Heart of the City column - in partnership with Invercargill Central - puts a focus on inner city Invercargill and reaffirms the area's status as the heart of the city.

Visitors to Invercargill’s city centre on Wednesday evening are in for a treat.
The popular Flames on Esk event will be held at Esk St with Flame Entertainment enlisted to “dazzle and delight” those who show up to the free event.
Flames on Esk will run from 6pm to 8.30pm with four explosive sessions of fire, flair, and fun.
The scheduled performance times are:
6pm to 6.15 pm
6.45pm to 7pm
7.30pm to 7.45pm
8.15pm to 8.30pm
The Invercargill Central food court will be open through to 9pm for those who also want to grab a bite to eat.
It is the third year Flames on Esk has been held, with the first staged in 2023.
Last year, it was expanded to also include a fashion show and was called Pohutukawa Fashion & Flames.
However, the weather did not come to the party for that event, and there was also the added setup requirement of a stage needed for the fashion show.
On Wednesday night, the event will return to the original concept from 2023.
Great South’s city centre coordinator Oli Cameron said with the forecast looking good, it was hoped a big crowd would make its way to Esk St on Wednesday evening.
“The idea is to bring people to the city centre to not just see the show, but also explore and maybe have a bite to eat,” Cameron said.
Flames on Esk is part of the “city centre activation programme”, which is funded by a targeted rate paid by landowners and building owners within the city centre area.
Wednesday night’s event is one of about 25 “activations” throughout a 12-month period, which are being organised to encourage people to visit and explore inner city Invercargill.
“Some of them are outdoors, some of them are indoors, some of them are performances, and some of them are more community-based activations,” Cameron said.
“The goal of our city centre activation programme, which is a collaboration between Great South and Invercargill City Council, is to bring people into the city centre and let them see what it has got to offer.”
Catch you all on Wednesday night.
