Bill Richardson Transport World has unveiled its latest collection – Vern Gill’s Matchbox Collection.
Featuring more than 1000 timeless treasures, the collection expands Transport World’s already diverse displays, with a magnitude of matchbox collectables.
"We’re absolutely delighted to be able to open this incredible collection to the public, which has so generously been donated to Transport World by Vern’s family," general manager Courtney Russell said.
Vern had various connections with the Richardson family, including his father John Gill, working for Bill’s father, Harold.
Vern’s family said Vern himself had seen first-hand many times when he visited the museum the care, dedication and respect the Transport World team have for the collections.
It was because of these connections, and the family wanting the collection to remain in its entirety, they decided the perfect place to display Vern’s passion was at Bill Richardson Transport World.
"We always say there is something for everyone here at Transport World, and Vern’s collection fits perfectly with that," Courtney said.
Vern Gill began collecting matchboxes in 1969, while on holiday in Fiji. He collected right up until his passing in October 2021.
"I’ve never seen anything like it, and you think working at Transport World, I’d say that a lot, but this is truly remarkable – you have to see it for yourself to get a real appreciation for Vern’s passion."
Visitors can do just that by visiting Bill Richardson Transport World, which is open every day of the year from 10am – 5pm, except for Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
