Invercargill 'spaces and places' finalists in national awards
“As a city, Invercargill has amazing places and spaces and offers so many opportunities to engage in recreation and play."

Invercargill’s Splash Palace and Russell Square are nominated for Outstanding Pool and Outstanding Park in the 2023 Recreation Aotearoa Awards.
A total of five projects and places have been recognised in the awards that highlight individuals, organisations, programmes and facilities that have made exceptional contributions to improving recreation and sport for New Zealanders.
Invercargill City Council acting Group Manager Community Spaces and Places Marcus Waters said the nominations meant so much to the teams and individuals across the council who worked so hard to make recreation in Invercargill stand out.
“As a city, Invercargill has amazing places and spaces and offers so many opportunities to engage in recreation and play. Nominations such as these are a fantastic way to highlight the brilliant work these teams do in helping provide these opportunities for our community.
“We would love a win, of course, but it’s also incredibly uplifting to be nominated,” he said.
Alongside Splash Palace and Russell Square, Council’s Joint Agency Work Plan for Department of Corrections is nominated for Outstanding Project, and the Sandy Point
Master Plan is nominated for the Outstanding Research Policy & Planning award.
Council’s ILT School Swimming Lessons are once again nominated for Outstanding Community Recreation Programme, having been nominated in 2021.
Southland’s iAm Games, hosted by Inclusive Activity Murihiku and Active Southland, is also nominated for Outstanding Event.
Queens Park won Outstanding Park at the 2021 Awards.
The Recreation Awards, held annually since 1991, will be presented at a gala dinner in Wellington in November.
