The NZ Pipe Band Championships will make its long-awaited return to Invercargill on Friday and Saturday at the Queens Park Cricket Grounds.
This major event, the largest pipe band competition ever held in New Zealand, was last hosted in Invercargill in 2020.
That event was infamous for the moment when Director General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield discovered the full extent to the Covid situation.
Bloomfield was in Invercargill watching his son compete at the pipe band championships in 2020.
The next day the Government announced that anyone coming into the country would need to self-isolate for 14 days.
The return of the event five years on is a boost for Invercargill with 57 bands and over 1500 pipers and drummers from across New Zealand, making the event the largest pipe band competition ever staged in the country.
Accommodation in Invercargill is stretched, with some bands staying in other parts of Southland to participate.
The event organisers are appreciative of the support they’ve received from across the city and beyond to make it happen.
Brendan Copeland - President of the Band - said: “This event wouldn’t be possible without the tireless efforts of our volunteer committee and the incredible support we’ve received from the local community.
“Hosting an event of this magnitude is no small task, but thanks to the efforts of our sponsors and volunteers, we’re able to bring something truly special to Invercargill.”
The two-day competition will take place at Invercargill’s picturesque Queens Park Cricket Grounds, with an expected crowd of over 2000 spectators.
A highlight of the weekend will be the famous Street March on Saturday morning, which will wind its way down Gala Street, showcasing the skill and precision of the competing bands.
