Leitch prepares for Lamborghini Young Driver shootout after podium in World Finals
This week Southland's Brendon Leitch lines up alongside eight other drivers vying for the GT3 Junior Drivers title run by Lamborghini Squadra Corse (Lamborghini’s motorsport department).
It’s been a stellar week for Southland’s Brendon Leitch competing in Lamborghini Super Trofeo competitions in Italy.
First, Letich won the Super Trofeo Europe series Pro title then went on to finish third in the 2023 Lamborghini Super Trofeo World Finals, a coming together of all three global Super Trofeo series including North America and Asia.
Now at the same Vallelunga Circuit in Campagnano di Roma, Italy, Leitch is preparing for his participation in the Lamborghini Young Driver Program one-day shootout this week.
“The World Finals were a lot of fun,” commented Leitch. “I really enjoyed the weekend and the competition.
“We had two qualifying sessions for the two 50-minute races. In the first one we were super-quick and qualified third fastest. In the second session I didn’t get a clear lap so ended up seventh.
“For the first race we started from third and finished second. We had some really good car speed and was able to catch and pass into second and hold that position until the end.
“I just couldn’t get passed the traffic in the second race. Being a solo driver, we must spend three more seconds in our compulsory pitstop compared with the two-driver teams so in the end I wasn’t able to peg back their advantage.
“We came home fifth and third overall so happy with the result as it exceeded my expectations.”
This week Leitch lines up alongside eight other drivers vying for the GT3 Junior Drivers title run by Lamborghini Squadra Corse (Lamborghini’s motorsport department).
The program is for drivers who participate in one or more championships over the course of the season at the wheel of the new Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2.
Leitch first competed in the 2023 Asia Le Mans Series with his Leipert Motorsport team finishing fourth overall then drove in the 2023 Michelin Le Mans Series as well as the 2023 Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe series.
The one-day shootout will evaluate the drivers in a practice session and both a qualifying and race simulation with the winner to receive support from Lamborghini Squadra Corse to race in the 2024 season.
