Limited candidate numbers for Environment Southland
Elections will only be required in the Hokonui and Invercargill-Rakiura constituencies for Enironment Southland.
Four of Environment Southland’s six wards won’t require elections in October, based on the number of people who have put their hands up to stand for Southland’s regional council.
Environment Southland has 12 councillors with six of them elected from the Invercargill-Rakiura ward, one Fiordland, two Eastern-Dome, one Hokonui, 1 western, and one southern.
There are 18 candidates standing with Paul Evans (Fiordland), Alastair Gibson, Jeremy McPhail (Eastern-Dome), Ewen Mathieson (Western), and Jon Pemberton (Southern), all being elected unopposed.
Elections will only be required in the Hokonui and Invercargill-Rakiura constituencies.
Environment Southland deputy electoral officer Paula Burke said the close of nominations marked the beginning of an important next step - voting.
“Now it’s over to the community to make their choice. These candidates have put their hands up to represent you. Your vote decides who will help shape the region’s future,” she said.
“Standing for council takes real commitment and I’d like to acknowledge everyone who has taken that step. Local democracy only works when people get involved, and it’s encouraging to see so many candidates wanting to contribute.”
Environment Southland, Invercargill City Council, Gore District Council, Southland District Council, ILT and the Mataura Licensing Trust are working together through Vote Murihiku 2025 to encourage participation in this year’s local body elections across the region.
You should receive your voting papers in the mail from 9 September. Voting closes at 12 noon on Saturday 11 October.
