Southland’s 2023/2024 Hawke Cup cricket campaign got off to a less-than-ideal start at the weekend.
Southland has suffered a first-up first-innings loss to Otago Country in the two-day fixture played at Queens Park in Invercargill.
Rain on Saturday meant just 43 overs were bowled on day one after Southland captain Brendan Domigan won the toss and opted to bat first.
In amongst the rain, opener Kieren Lloyd still found time to impress with his knock of 92 from 116 balls which was the central role in getting Southland through to a first-innings total of 264.
Lloyd put on 111 runs with Aaron Hart (38 from 82 balls) for the second wicket before Southland lost a flurry of wickets.
They went from 129 for one to 165 for six when Lloyd departed.
Charlie Ottrey, on debut, did chip with 38 runs while Jed Mockford also contributed an unbeaten 28 before Southland’s innings was wrapped up on Sunday morning.
It meant Otago Country had the majority of the day to chase down 265 for first innings points.
Sukhdev Singh led the way with the ball taking six for 53 from 24.3 overs.
It was over to the Otago Country batsmen to step up, and boy did they do just that.
Openers Josh Shackleton and Taylor Cumberland laid the foundations with an opening stand of 63 but it was Cam Jackson who was the star of the show when he entered.
Jackson produced an unbeaten knock of 109 from 115 balls. He partnered with David Loggenberg (51*) and the pair put on an unbeaten 144-run stand for the fifth wicket as Otago Country breezed past the required 265 runs with six wickets up their sleeve.
Southland has a short amount of time to regroup as they eye a trip to Ashburton next weekend to take on Mid Canterbury.
