Mum's the Word bringing laughter and tears to Invercargill audiences
“I just laughed the entire time. It was so funny, and so special to see these women up there saying things about motherhood and sense of self that just resonated so deeply with me.”
If you’ve been a mum, have a mum or just fancy a night out then don’t keep quiet about Mum’s the Word.
Repertory Invercargill’s latest offering, following on from the sell-out season of smash-hit Blackadder: Butler to the Prince, is funny, touching, raw and honest, just like motherhood itself.
Repertory Invercargill president and first-time director Anya Bowman has had an eye out for a chance to direct this piece since she first saw it performed in Invercargill two decades ago.
“I just laughed the entire time. It was so funny, and so special to see these women up there saying things about motherhood and sense of self that just resonated so deeply with me.”
Joining Bowman is a cast of five seasoned Southland performers including singer-songwriter and radio announcer Liv Cochrane in her second show with Repertory Invercargill following her turn in the award-winning 18 Eden Avenue.
“It’s an incredibly strong cast. We’ve had the time of our lives creating this piece and the strength and camaraderie of these women just shines from the stage,” Bowman said.
Performed throughout the world, Mum’s The Word is award-winning theatre piece written by six performers in the early 90s, mothers who had endured the agonies and ecstasies of parenting.
A hysterically funny and deeply touching play, it deals, in shocking detail, all the important elements of childrearing; the good, the bad, and the ugly.
“There’s timeless content in this play - what was relevant 20 years ago is still very much so today,” Bowman said.
Mum’s The Word will be performed at Repertory House from August 23 to 26. Tickets are available on the Repertory website.
