Mysterious social media account takes aim at mayor, Invercargill
“I’ve heard about the Instagram [account] and I’ve heard that some of the things are funny and some of them are a bit cutting, but so be it. I’m not worried about it.”
Invercargill Mayor Nobby Clark is swatting off the emergence of a mysterious new social media account that’s labelled him “racist” and a “dinosour” who has a “high chance of embarrassing the city”.
The Instagram page called “Invercargill is ill” has also questioned treatment of mana whenua representatives on the council, pokes fun at Invercargill suggesting there’s a reluctance to change, amongst other things Invercargill related.
Who is behind the account full of meme posts remains somewhat a mystery. The Tribune messaged the account asking for a chat but is yet to receive a reply.
The bio for the account says: “New page spread the word. Memes about how ill and lolz Invers is. Disclaimer: For the laughs - don’t take too seriously”.
Clark says he has been made aware of the account but hasn’t personally viewed it and did not know who was behind it.
“I’ve heard about the Instagram [account] and I’ve heard that some of the things are funny and some of them are a bit cutting, but so be it. I’m not worried about it.”
“I don’t do online stuff anyway. If you’ve got an hour to spend jump on to Netflix and look at a programme called the social dilemma. It tells you what cell phones and the technology around platforms do to your life.”
The account was operating prior to the national headlines over Clark’s use of the “n-word” at a recent arts event but posts taking a jab at Clark have ramped up since that.
“At the end of the day you’ve got to have a thick skin to be in politics and you’ve got to stand for what you believe in. Clearly, I got some flack over that, but I got a whole lot of support you don’t see. So, I’m not worried about it.”
“The bottom line is some people have said to me if you were in the same situation would you do it again, I said; ‘absolutely’. Because I believe in what I raised,” Clark says.
The page also had a jibe at the Invercargill City Council earlier this month when the council voted for Michael Day to become its new CEO which effectively ousted Clare Hadley from the job.
The memes are very boomery but I appreciate someone willing to criticize Nobby nonetheless.
As the Mayou KNOBBY your job is to stand up for the Invercargill City and the people, not project your own views and beliefs. Social Media and mobile phones is the future and it is here now, it gives your a critical analysis of what PEOPLE are thinking and saying. NETFLIX is a one-sided look to a story. In terms of the mysterious person behind the account, definitely not hard to figure out .
