There is a risk in New Zealand if the spotlight is shone almost solely on first XV rugby, in terms of the rugby production line, the player pool at the elite level will narrow further.

The provincial union’s role in the development of New Zealand rugby players is up for debate.

At the moment the country’s 14 NPC provincial unions have academy setups. As do the country’s five Super Rugby teams.

Is it necessary?

Some New Zealand Rugby officials believe the elite development pathway should be led and largely left to the Super Rugby organisations.

The theme of the conversation is provinces should instead pour all of their time and effort into participation and the community game.
