Rehearsals for 25th Shakespeare in the Park underway
“One of the best parts of the overall Shakespeare experience, from our point of view, is the magic that happens when our experienced cast and crew get to work with our fresh faces."

Rehearsals for Shakespeare in the Park Charitable Trust’s 25th performance, Sweet Swan of Southland, is well underway.
The show, Sweet Swan of Southland, is a 70-minute pastiche of Shakespearean scenes that focus on love, death and hope as a travelling troupe of thespians connect with their audience through pieces from Much Ado about Nothing, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet and A Winter’s Tale.
Shakespeare in the Park Charitable Trust President Angela Newell says a cast of 9 is bringing both fresh faces and old hands to the stage this summer.
“One of the best parts of the overall Shakespeare experience, from our point of view, is the magic that happens when our experienced cast and crew get to work with our fresh faces,” she says.
“Some of our “babies” have gone on to do great things in theatre throughout Aotearoa and that’s a lovely feeling.”
Shakespeare in the Park has spent quarter of a century sharing a love of Shakespeare with the community both on and off stage, and the Trust is always looking to welcome more people into the fold, she says.
Created in collaboration with Waihopai performing arts collective Majestic Frog, Sweet Swan of Southland is a family-friendly show, with lots of easy-to-understand material, Newell says.
