Well-respected Southland business and community man Reece McDonald has died suddenly.
McDonald owned the Invercargill branch of Good Tech - previously Ricoh - and in April this year took over the role as the Southland Business Chamber’s president.
The 47-year-old also has had significant impact in the community through various roles, most notably in cycling where he previously held the role of Cycling Southland president.
McDonald was also a key figure in the annual Queenstown to Invercargill Westpac Chopper Appeal fundraiser - both helping in the organisation and participating.
McDonald’s 10th ride this year coincided with the charity event tipping over the $1 million mark, in terms of the funds raised across the 13 rides held.
The born-an-bred Southlander joined The Roar Podcast just before the 2024 ride where McDonald explained how the fundraiser was for personal for him given, he previously needed to use the rescue helicopter in 2019 after suffering a heart attack.
When McDonald took on the role of Southland Business Chamber president in April, he was excited by the opportunity to represent Southland businesses.
“As a small business owner myself, I understand the daily challenges and opportunities that our Chamber members encounter. I am committed to leveraging my firsthand experience to advocate for practical solutions and drive positive outcomes for our local business community,” McDonald said at the time.
McDonald died on Saturday after an unexpected medical event.
Southland Business Chamber CEO Sheree Carey said the loss of McDonald was being felt by many.
“He was our leader and our friend. Reece always had a warmth and cheeky smile when visiting our Chamber offices or with anything he was involved in.
“We are at a loss for words, and appreciate the support we have received from the business community.
“Our love and thoughts are with Jo, their children and Reece’s wider family and friends. As well as his Goodtech whanau.
“Reece, we will miss you.”
