The Eastern Southland kid ready to step onto rugby's biggest stage
There’s an Ethan de Groot story I do enjoy retelling. It dates back to his schoolboy days. He had attended Gore High School before joining Southland Boys’ High School for his final year at school in 2016 de Groot was playing for the Southland Boys’ first XV at the Les George Oval on the outskirts of Invercargill. Rakiura trail run emerges as popular Southland event
Five years after its conception, the Rakiura Challenge trail run looks to have found its place on the southern events calendar. The brainchild of Wānaka resource management planner Morgan Shepherd, the 32km trail run around the Rakiura track, New Zealand’s southern-most Great Walk, hosted its third edition on October 7 with a sold-out 250-strong field. Tour Countdown: Cycling legends to bring knowledge to SBS Tour of Southland
The 2023 SBS Bank Tour of Southland will start on October 29. In the lead-up to the event, The Tribune is running a series of Tour Countdown stories. Jersey change: Tour of Southland officials have ditched the traditional yellow tour leader’s jersey and replaced it with a new orange jersey for the 2023 race starting on October 29. Race director Glen Thomson said they had decided on the move to honour the support it had received from the event’s major sponsor SBS Bank. (READ MORE HERE).
Special Invercargill win: “We knew after two losses that bringing [Australia] to Invercargill would scare them a bit and the crowd certainly produced. It was the eighth person out there on court with us.” (READ MORE HERE).
Tour Countdown: The 2023 SBS Bank Tour of Southland will have a Japanese flavour attached to it. Four Japanese endurance track riders are set to line up in New Zealand’s premier road cycling race. (READ MORE HERE).
Magic Moment: Jane Muir has had many magic moments in a long career as Southland’s most accomplished sprinters and one of New Zealand’s best ever. Included are two Commonwealth Games, a world championship, world junior champs and 18 national championship titles. (READ MORE HERE).
75 years: It was April 28, 1948 when a group of motoring enthusiasts gathered in Invercargill in response to a newspaper advertisement and the Southland Sports Car Club was formed. (READ MORE HERE).
