Will the Sharks be part of the playoffs?
The Southland Sharks have left themselves with a challenging assignment in its attempt to book a playoff spot in the 2023 National Basketball League.
The Sharks now have a five-win eight loss record as they head into their final five games of the regular season.
The latest loss came against league leaders Auckland Tuatara on Saturday night. The Sharks showed some encouraging signs at at one point led by 10 before being blitzed in the fourth quarter to lose 101-86.
Southland led 72-65 heading into the final quarter before the home team won the final period 36-14.
The Sharks scored 50 points in the first half but managed just 36 in the second.
In 2022 ten wins were what was required to book a top-six playoff spot. A year on and nine wins, maybe even eight could get you there.
If that is so the Sharks need to win at least three of their remaining five games to give them a shot.
It starts tonight when less than 24 hours after the loss to the Tuatara Southland will line up against the Franklin Bulls.
Tip-off is 6pm with the game screened live on both Prime and Sky Sport.
Auckland Tuatara 101 (Rob Loe 32, Reuben Te Rangi 20, Jared Weeks 17, Cameron Giddon 17), Southland Sharks 86 (Jeremy Kendle 29, Grant Anticevich 17, Josh Cunningham 13).
Wazza on the world stage….
Southland’s favorite darts player Warren “Wazza” Parry has again been competing on the world stage. This time at the 2023 World Cup of Darts in Germany.
It’s a country versus country event and Parry teamed up with Canterbury’s Ben Robb to represent New Zealand.
Unfortunately, the pair were knocked out in pool play. While Parry and Robb beat Bahrain 4 legs to one they lost to Latvia 4-2 and it was Latvia who progressed to the knockout stage of the tournament.
From the Archives…
Speaking of Warren Parry this is as good of an opportunity as any to roll out one of my all-time favorite Southland sports stories.
The day the meat worker from Invercargill knocked over Mighty Mike van Gerwen, the world’s leading darts player.
Take a trip down memory lane and have a read of this story: Unassuming darts star Parry is back on the job

SBHS knocks over Kings High School….
A hat-trick of tries to second five-eighth Jerome Buckley has lifted Southland Boys’ High School to a 33-17 victory over Dunedin’s Kings High School in the Otago Secondary Schools rugby competition.
Next up for Southland Boys’ will be John McGlashan College in Invercargill at 12.45pm next Saturday.
In Southland’s U18 competition, it was St Peters College which won the match of the round beating Verdon College 26-18. The SBHS 2nd XV racked up a 61-0 victory over James Hargest College with Alexander Burns contributing 26 points.
In the third game the combined Menzies College/Gore High outfit beat SBHS’ ‘Dogs of War’ team 58-21. Both Alex Burgess and Logan van der Straaten scored hat-tricks.
