Stags let in four second-half tries in preseason loss
The Southland Stags conceded 26 unanswered second-half points in its 31-7 loss to Otago in Dunedin on Friday. Logan Savory wraps up the action. (READ MORE HERE).
Was the preseason Stags result as bad as it looked?
“We just had [to defend] so many 5m lineouts and no matter who you are playing, if they’ve got that many they are going to rack up some points.” (READ MORE HERE).
Other rugby bits and pieces….
The Southland Development team dished up an encouraging result in Oamaru on Saturday toppling Heartland team Mid Canterbury 43-10.
The Southland Development team has a beefed-up campaign in 2023 and Saturday’s performance was another step forward after beating another Heartland team North Otago over 40 minutes in Te Anau seven days earlier.
The fixture also provided an opportunity for some game time for various Stags squad members, including props Quinn Harrison-Jones and Shaun Stodart, and centre Angus Simmers.
Out at Waikaia the Southland Under-19 and Southland Country teams went at it and it was Southland U19 who grabbed the victory 19-17 in a tight contest.
Meanwhile in schoolboy rugby the SBHS first XV racked up an 101-0 victory over South Otago High School and now eyes a semifinal showdown this coming Saturday.
SBHS has finished top of the table in the Otago Secondary Schools competition and will take on King’s High School in one semifinal on Saturday.
John McGlashan will host Otago Boys’ High School in the other semifinal.

New Zealand Championship medals for Southland runners
This was it. The main event. Saturday’s New Zealand crosscountry champs. For some of the more competitive serious runners this was the finale if their season. The harrier events to date were dress rehearsals. (READ MORE HERE).
