Bronze at the World Championships….
Southland’s Tom Sexton and Nick Kergozou have claimed a bronze medal at the 2023 World Track Cycling Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.
The pair were part of the New Zealand men’s pursuit team alongside Campbell Stewart and Aaron Gate.
They had the bronze medal sewn up in the first lap after the Australian starter slipped his pedal, with the new ruling meaning only a mechanical issue can gain a restart.
By the time the Australians recovered the men in black had a three-second buffer, which they continued to build, going through the 3000m in 2:562 and catching their opponents to secure the third placing.
Later Denmark finished the stronger to claim the gold medal by two seconds over the Olympic champions, Italy.
Thistle on top…
The Thistle Football Club leads the race towards Southland club football’s prized possession the Donald Gray Cup.
Thistle sits three points clear at the top of the standings in the five-team contest.
Its latest win came during the week with a 2-0 victory over Winton. It extended its 2023 record to 11 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss.
In second spot is Queens Park who recorded a 3-2 win against Old Boys on Saturday, while Gore had the bye.
Meanwhile, Queens Park’s impressive winning run of four-straight wins in the Southern Premier League came to an end on Saturday it was beaten 3-0 by top-of-the-table Mosgiel in Mosgiel.
The assignment doesn’t get any easier for Queens Park given this coming Saturday it will take on Roslyn Wakari who sits second in the competition standings.
