Stadium review points to 'short-comings' in initial actions
“While the results were not unexpected, this document provides clarity for the organisation to move forward."
A review into the handling of an employment complaint at ILT Stadium Southland has found “shortcomings”, although just what they are have not been made public.
It was revealed in April that Invercargill Mayor Nobby Clark had liaised with a third party about a complaint of alleged sexual harassment involving then councillor Nigel Skelt in Skelt’s role as ILT Stadium Southland’s general manager.
At the time Clark was part of the Southland Indoor Leisure Centre Charitable Trust which effectively owns the stadium and oversees the funding of it.
Although he was not part of the stadium’s management board which is in charge of the operational management of the stadium.
After a six-week review process, conducted by Christchurch-based Barrister Tim Mackenzie, Stadium Southland Limited (SSL) has received the findings of the review of events at Stadium Southland earlier this year.
Board chair Hayden Rankin released a statement on Monday which said the board was pleased to have the independent review completed.
He said the review confirmed that there were shortcomings in the initial actions undertaken, but “at no time were express governance or constitutional obligations breached”.
“While the results were not unexpected, this document provides clarity for the organisation to move forward."
"We take confidence in the breadth of this review which covered a 10-week period and in the fact that Mr Mackenzie is an experienced investigator from outside of the city."
Just what the shortcomings were not expanded on in the release. The Tribune has asked for the full review findings.
The release says with the resulting changes in personnel, “the board is well-positioned to take this iconic venue forward”.
Clark has removed himself from the stadium trust board, as has former long-time stadium board chair Alan Dennis.
Clark - with Dennis’ authority - put the offer to the complainant of a $3000 payment for loss of income, covering counsellor costs, and a potential job opportunity at the ILT.
Meanwhile, Rankin, on behalf of the board, thanked the staff of the venue.
“We acknowledge the work of our team who have been consistent in providing a great experience for all who come to ILT Stadium Southland and for the support of the community as we worked our way through this.”
Recruitment for a permanent Stadium Southland General Manager will begin immediately, Rankin said.
Transparency at its very worst.
Deary me.
