The fifth edition of the Famous Young Chefs Degustation Luncheon was held at SIT’s Hansen Hall in Invercargill on Sunday.
The unique Pure South-sponsored event saw young chefs, who are training at SIT or Southland Boys’ High School, put together a five-course meal for guests - technically six courses if you include the canapes.
The brilliant part of the event is those young Southland chefs were mentored by visiting internationally recognised chefs.
To help make the event possible various Southland food producers supplied the product which was transformed into spectacular dishes, showcasing the produce Southland has to offer.
The Famous Young Chefs Degustation Luncheon has been organised by well-known Invercargill-based chef Graham Hawkes who on Sunday said after 60 years in the hospitality industry he was stepping down.
It was met with a standing ovation from those in attendance and an impromptu rendition of He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.
The event has raised over $120,000 over the years with some of that money going towards new equipment for the Scott Richardson Culinary Arts Kitchen at Southland Boys’ High School.
Funds have also gone towards the Southern Charity Hospital.
