For the next few weeks, like many, we are looking to recharge the batteries a little. We’ll be scaling back our newsletter output but won’t be closing down completely.
We will send out a weekly Tribune editions and expect it to be a little different. There will be a monster Southland included in the mix, amongst other treats.

Heading to Christmas at the Races?… Here are some tips
Southland’s biggest race meeting of the year - in terms of crowd numbers - will take place tomorrow (Saturday) at the Ascot Park Raceway in Invercargill.
Many of those on course will be racing novices, but racing writers Jamie Searle and Tayler Strong, along with the TAB, are here to help our Tribune readers.

Canterbury jockeys Tina Comignaghi and Kylie Williams will be hoping the success they had at the Southland Racing Club's Christmas meeting in the past continues tomorrow (Saturday). (READ MORE HERE).
Cousins' women's shearing record bid all-go near Gore
The green light has been given for the summer’s first shearing record attempt in New Zealand in Eastern Southland today (Friday) – with the record holders on hand to cheer on their challengers. (READ MORE HERE).

Te Anau Tennis Invitational - December 28 & 29
If you love your tennis served with a side of world-class scenery, the Distinction Hotels Te Anau Invitational has the ticket for you.
Since 2012 the cream of New Zealand’s tennis talent have clambered for one of the eight starting spots in this most unique of tournaments, hosted by the Te Anau Tennis Club.
The event draws some of New Zealand’s highest-ranked talent including multiple winner and Davis Cup stalwart Rubin Statham, and internationally-renowned doubles player Mike Venus, who in 2017 won the French Open Grand Slam Doubles Title.
Some spots are opened up to the finest rising tennis talent in New Zealand. The invitational has become an important New Zealand tennis fixture, our top men’s players to get three hard matches before taking on the New Zealand and Australian Opens in January.

157 years and counting: This is a story of longevity. Remarkable longevity. Officially the Invercargill Garrison Band - now the Ascot Park Hotel Brass Band of Invercargill - dates back to 1867. However, there have since been mentions of the band found from as far back as 1863. (READ MORE HERE).
Comment: As it has turned out, former SIT CEO Penny Simmonds has gone on to light a metaphoric match that will largely send the centralised polytechnic - Te Pūkenga - up in smoke. What a five-year period it has been. (READ MORE HERE).
‘Take a pause’: A submitter has suggested the Invercargill City Council “take a pause, have a cup of tea” and consider the former H&J Smith department site for a new museum. Although, councillors have noted that the council has already decided to build a new museum at the current Queens Park site and they believe the public simply wants them to get on with it.
