Arts leader points to council project budget removal
A Southland arts leader has acknowledged some concerns following the Invercargill City Council’s removal of an arts budget in its proposed long-term plan. In 2018 the Invercargill City Council included $14 million as part of its 2018-2028 long-term plan to build a new arts and creativity hub in the city. That allocation has now been removed. Future uncertain for small town’s iconic surfer statue
A prominent statue that has graced the entrance of a Southland town for 25 years could be riding its final wave. Wear and tear from the elements and damage from people climbing on it has put the future of Colac Bay/Ōraka’s giant surfer in doubt. (READ MORE HERE).
Former Invercargill council boss lands new job
Former Invercargill City Council chief executive Clare Hadley has been named as the Manuherekia Catchment Group’s (MCG) General Manager. Hadley joins the group following a lengthy career working in Local Government. Her most recent role was with the Invercargill council for five years through to 2023. (READ MORE HERE).
U20s presence 'massive' for Southland rugby
Southland’s growing presence at the Highlanders U20 rugby level is “massive” for the province, says Rugby Southland’s academy manager. In previous years Southland’s representation in the Highlanders squad at the national Super Rugby U20s tournament has hovered around the three-to-five mark. (READ MORE HERE).

Bluecliffs residents ‘hacked off’ over treatment
A Bluecliffs resident says people are “hacked off” at emergency management’s communication while the area has been under threat. On Wednesday, Emergency Management Southland announced residents of the small coastal hamlet could return home following a 12-day evacuation to clear an old dumpsite. (READ MORE HERE).
