Council makes 'strategic' Winton land purchase
Southland District Council has confirmed the purchase of land near Winton. Chief executive Cameron McIntosh said the purchase is a strategic land acquisition to enable any future potential use for the required upgrade of the Winton wastewater system. (READ MORE HERE).
Unique new opponent looms for Southland Sharks in 2025
The Southland Sharks will have a unique new opponent in 2025 with an Indian-team to join the New Zealand National Basketball League. There will also be a new Indian team in the women’s Tauihi competition. Owned by InBL Pro - who also run basketball leagues in India - the Indian Panthers will be based in South Auckland and play out of Takanini’s Pulman Arena. (READ MORE HERE).

MP targets Trusts: ACT MP Simon Court has lodged a new member’s bill to abolish the remaining liquor licensing trusts’ alcohol ‘monopoly’ - including the Invercargill Licensing Trust. Although ILT CEO Chris Ramsay has pushed back believing Court is “out of touch” and adds there is already a mechanism in place if the public what licensing trust privileges removed. (READ MORE HERE).
Mayor’s pushback: In a strongly worded September 11 email to other Southland council mayors and CEOs, Invercargill Mayor Clark asked why he was the only Mayor prepared to challenge mana whenua. “We all know the huge costs to our ratepayers, yet we dance around the 'iwi relationship at any cost' process.” (READ MORE HERE).
