After coming off the bench against the Bulls on March 5, 2011 Aaron Smith made the cheeky suggestion to Jimmy Cowan's face in Pretoria that he should be starting ahead of Cowan. The rest is history.

It’s March 5, 2011. The Highlanders have beaten the Bulls 35-28 in Pretoria, South Africa.

A 21-year-old halfback by the name of Aaron Smith had made his Super Rugby debut off the bench that day.

The relatively no-name Manawatu hairdresser had been recruited by Jamie Joseph to join the Highlanders that year.

He’d previously been part of the Blues setup but struggled for opportunities.
