Town crier opts out of Invercargill mayoral race
“There is a real risk that my candidacy for Mayor could split the vote among those seeking a new direction for Invercargill. I do not want to be the reason progress is delayed."
Lynley McKerrow’s bid to become Invercargill’s next mayor is over before it began.
McKerrow, known by many as Invercargill’s town crier, had announced last month she would stand for the Invercargill mayoralty at October’s election.
However, McKerrow revealed this week she had now decided not to stand for the mayor’s job and would instead run for a seat as a councillor.
She said the decision had come following careful consideration and conversations with community members and supporters.
“This decision was not made lightly. I believe strongly in fresh leadership and positive change, but I also recognise the importance of unity in this election.
“There is a real risk that my candidacy for Mayor could split the vote among those seeking a new direction for Invercargill. I do not want to be the reason progress is delayed.
“Standing as a Councillor allows me to serve our city with integrity and commitment while also gaining deeper insight into the inner workings of Council.”

McKerrow said the next three-year term would be critical, with significant changes ahead.
“I am ready to bring steady leadership, clear communication, and a strong community voice to the council table.
“My motivation remains the same: to help build a council that listens, acts, and puts people first.”
To date, current deputy mayor Tom Campbell, and current councillors Alex Crackett, Ian Pottinger, and Ria Bond have confirmed they will contest the Invercargill mayoralty in October.
Tom Morton has also confirmed his intention to stand for the mayoralty again, despite receiving only 323 votes out of 20,502 at the 2022 election.
