“I love it, the size of it, the fact it is military grade, and the story behind it."

A telescope with a unique history has made its way to Invercargill.
And for now, it is providing a significant talking point as part of a new boutique design store that opened in the city last month.
Invercargill woman Sarah King has long had an interest in collecting eclectic pieces, as well as interior design.
She has now transformed that passion into a business by opening the new Herbert & Nancy store in Yarrow St.
The name Herbert & Nancy is in honour and loving memory of King’s grandparents.
King has actively sourced unique inventory to display and sell in the new store.
Included is a telescope which was used in London to keep a look out for bombs in World War 2.
Someone had purchased it from an older gentleman in London before bringing it to Invercargill, which was where King discovered it and snapped it up a couple of months ago.
“[It was] used in the second world war to look out for bombs and just keep an eye on all the aircraft going around.
“Ironically it was actually bombed, and it has got its bumps and bruises, but it still works perfectly.
“I love it, the size of it, the fact it is military grade, and the story behind it,” King said.
Also at the new Herbert & Nancy store is some “trench art” which was made in World War 1 from shell casings.
“They were there for a long time so in the trenches they would make trench art from the shells, they are amazing. They are dated 1914.”

The majority of the items on sale at the store have a story attached to them, and that is what appeals to King.
“I believe every object has a history, and I love giving forgotten pieces a new life,” King said.
“Herbert and Nancy isn't just a shop; it's a place where memories are preserved and new stories begin. I'm excited to offer Invercargill a destination for unique finds, and I'm equally thrilled to work with families to help them find value in their cherished possessions.”
King welcomed individuals and families who are looking to clear out estates or downsize, to touch base.
She will assess and purchase items that fit the store's distinctive aesthetic.
The new Herbert & Nancy store can be found over the road from the Kracker Jacs Dairy on Yarrow St at Sylvan Bank in Invercargill.
