For mana whenua, south is up and north is down, meaning Motupōhue is the true top of the country. “It’s only fitting that we have a world-class visitor experience here.”
Absolute arrogance !!! its all about them ? think of the rest on NZ for a change ? We can't even get real power to Rakiura ! $18 000000 , that would help , were only 20 miles away !
Certainly struggle with the idea that this would bring visitor spend the Bluff. Sure it would be an iconic landmark but surely there needs to be some return on the 18 million dollar investment.
We seem to be grasping at straws rather than actually thinking how to both improve the visitor experience and also get them to spend money in the region.
The Bluff oyster festival is a great example of putting something out there that encourage people to come and in turn spend money.
So any successful Bluff strategy would surely include food. With Bluff that would have to be seafood.
Imagine a restaurant on the southern end of the old wharf that was buried below seas level where people could sit behind glass and see the underneath of the ocean while enjoying southern fare bought straight off boats the tie up alongside.
Southland needs to think a lot smarter if they want to see tourism spend become a larger part of the economic return to the region.
I find it staggering that $18 million is being talked about being spent anywhere in the south on a project such as this. It seems to me that the concept and demonstration of prudence has been lost and during times of financial hardship for many this should be a priority. Show a bit of common sense please and put this initiative on back burner for a few years.
Tourism is the second largest income earner for this country. Development’s like this turn into tourist spends in Southland. Tiwai still haven’t announced what they are doing so anything that creates new economic development opportunities for growth should be encouraged.
An inspirational vision that will pay for itself with future regional tourism and cultural implications. Good luck!

Your comment completely ignores my message. If you don't have the money, don't spend. Simple really.
This is an Occult energy structure. There is actually a building frenzy of these sorts of structures taking place throughout NZ at the moment.
