Was a tough game to watch. I felt worse about Aaron Smith being denied a try in his last test match than the All Blacks loss. He is a magic player and scored the try with his normal panache with a lovely dive. The All Blacks showed plenty of heart.

I do wonder why a red card on a player should be used to punish the whole team. Be a far greater spectacle to see and even match and leave the punishment out of the game result. But then that would mean treating the yellow card differently as well.

Great article Logan, something has to change.but who will listen.the TMO should not in my view have an opinion.he should only be allowed to bring the referees attention to the large screen.too often the TMO is taking over.this final may trigger some response perhaps not.it might have if england was involved.a sorry state isn't it.

I think the technology advances are making rugby an inferior product as compared to how it's used in other sports.

Because rugby has so many technical rules it means when you analyse it frame by frame you can literally find fault in almost every phase of a game.

So having a television review official live dictating the flow of the game makes for a very ugly stop start game.

If they are going to police the game this way why go back to the referee to then stop the game a re watch what has already technically been decided as an infringement/error.

It completely disrupts the flow of the game.

A word cup final should showcase the best version of the game to the world, nothing about that gets me excited about the state of world rugby moving into the future.

If the game was officiated to the letter of the law there would be so many stoppages. I actually thought Barnes was OK but not useless. His TMOs not so much. I was surprised by some missed knock ons by de Klerk and I was bamboozled when he penalized Savea in the first half and then apologised, yet let Pollard kick the goal. Frizell's yellow was confusing and the lack of policing the breakdown effectively slowed the game down.

That was the killer for me. If Smith's try was ruled out because an earlier infringement spotted by the TMO, why wasn't that penalty Pollard kicked as a result of an admitted refereeing error ruled out as well?

You're right Logan. I liken the game now to local govt. H&S legislation, regulation and bureaucracy have constricted and stifled councils to a near stand still, just as tackle height, rules and officialdom have ruined the game of rugby for players and fans alike. The amount of time in the first half alone spent looking at screens and chatter back & forth to the field made it a game for the men in white. 40 mins playing time turned into 60 and the players on both sides were looking confused about what to do next. The spectacle was ruined from the first yellow card waved. To top it off the opposite final decisions made on the two captains yellow card offences beggars belief! As a player, coach and fan for all my life l dispair for the game and its future.

Good article for on a difficult subject. Now that the Americans are important shareholders of the All Blacks they will be on guard to avoid as many legal cases as possible. There is no question that long term rugby players suffer not only brain injuries a multitude of other aliments. Those at the top know all this so are judging on the side of caution. The South Africans played brilliantly so let them enjoy their day in the sun.
