Councillors discussed the museum budget issues at a closed workshop meeting last week and it is understood the majority of councillors supported coming up with the extra $12.9m.
Interesting it comes after the old one is taken down and the design/concept of the new one was recently praised about. Now it’s “well if you still want this I’m going to have to sell that” funny how things seem to pan out isn’t it?
Maybe it’s time to clean off some of that whiteboard in the office and stop juggling too many things.
interesting how these vanity projects just keep getting more money allocated to them. i offered them our 150 Dee St x Farmers building when this was first being looked at. Being over 6000m2 of space in a good location walking distance from the new hotels, they would save multi millions and also save on construction time and still have space to rent to some of the retailers that we are currently working with. Also why wasn't the old museum kept for storage saving more unnecessary cost to the ratepayer.
I do love that this is coming so soon after the LTP (approved end of June, just a month ago).So for appearances sake we still have a rate increase of less than 10%, but oops only for a month, now we will whack it up another couple of percent ……. I am sure no one will notice. And those who pledged to have a rate increase less than 10% don’t lose face because we all know how important that will be at election time.
Fund it - we need a great museum; we can't afford to have a mediocre one...
