Club Rugby: 'We are very proud' - Midlands get job done
The sixth round of Southland’s premier club rugby competition on Saturday was an eventful one. It included a draw, the continued resurrection of Marist, and a fairy tale victory for the lads from Winton. Logan Savory wraps up the three games. (READ MORE HERE).
Sharks coach: 'I've built a team; I didn’t acquire talent'
The Southland Sharks have somewhat flown under the radar through its preseason and even during the first three rounds of the 2023 NBL. Coach Guy Molloy has got a theory about that. And is more than happy with the situation. (READ MORE HERE).
Southern Steel come up short again…
The Southern Steel’s bleak ANZ Premiership season continued on Sunday as its winless 2023 campaign stretched out further with a 50-31 loss to the Mainland Tactix in Dunedin.
The Steel had its moments which included winning a low-scoring first quarter 10-9, but the Tactix were able to win ugly.
The Steel’s 31 game goals is believed to be its lowest in an ANZ Premiership Championship fixture.
The focus now switches to Saturday where the Steel will take on the Central Pulse in Invercargill.
Six points separate the top team and fifth team in a tight competition, but the Steel sit last, 13 competition points off fifth place.
Nine goals, one player….. A big day out
How about this for a day out. Tyler Andrews racked up nine goals on her own playing for Queens Park in the SBS Bank Women’s Kolk Cup football competition on Saturday.
Her nine goals lifted Queens Park to a 15-0 victory over Southend United.
Although for the record, it’s not the most recorded in a Southland senior women’s football game. In 2011 14-year-old Alex McIntosh netted 12 goals in a game for Old Boys.
In other Kolk Cup games on Saturday, Old Boys was also big winners beating Winton 11-2 and Gore Wanderers knocked over Eastern Southland rivals Wyndham 5-2.
In Donald Gray Cup action Queens Park toppled defending champions Thistle FC 3-1, with Old Boys also making it two for two to start the 2023 season with its 4-1 win over Waihopai.
Thistle’s second team picked up a 4-0 win over Balclutha, while Te Anau also made it two from two to start the season with a 2-1 victory against Winton.
Southend United beat Gore 2-1.
In Southern Premier League action, Queens Park had a tough day out on the road losing 5-0 to Dunedin City Royals.
Henry Hubber's win provides lift that trainer needed
Henry Hubber's win in Christchurch on Saturday gave trainer Sally McKay one hell of a lift. The showy chestnut was one of four Southland-trained winners at the Canterbury Jockey Club's race day. The other three, Prince Alby, Classic Diva and She's A Con, are all trained by Kelvin and Aimee Tyler. (READ MORE HERE).
