45 points: Kendle joins Kevin Braswell as Sharks record-holder
It was a bittersweet type of Saturday night for American Jeremy Kendle. The American yet again inked his name into the Southland Sharks record books. Kendle’s 45-point haul against the Taranaki Airs at ILT Stadium Southland equalled the record for the most points scored by a Sharks player in a single game. (READ MORE HERE).
Southland runners heat up Otago schools championships
Conditions at Kaikorai Valley College Dunedin for the Otago schools crosscountry champs were crisp, cold and frosty, but a group of Southland runners made the tip north and proceeded to heat up the competition. (READ MORE HERE).

SBHS thump Waitaki Boys….
The Southland Boys’ High School first XV has racked up a 69-5 victory over Waitaki Boys’ High School in the Otago Secondary Schools rugby competition.
SBHS scored 11 tries to one in a commanding performance. They sit in second just one competition point behind Otago Boys’ High School in the standings.
Meanwhile, in the Southland Under-18 competition, Verdon College and Central Southland College dished up the most intense contest on Saturday with Verdon College snatching a 10-7 victory.
In come on the back of two tries to Miguel Bartlett-McBrude.
In other results, the SBHS second XV beat its fellow SBHS team in the competition 31-7, and the combined Gore High/Menzies College beat St Peters College 38-10.
Southland football wrap….
Waihopai has won its first game in the 2023 Southland Express Men’s League and has done it in style.
Waihopai racked up a remarkably high-scoring 10-4 victory over Te Anau on Saturday. The Invercargill club went into the game without a win while Te Anau had dropped just one game through six outings.
Tremayne Uakino and Carl Henderson both bagged hattricks on the way to the confidence-boosting victory.
After a sublime start to the season, Te Anau has now recorded back-to-back losses including conceding 13 goals.
The Southern Steel Windows Old Boys team currently leads the competition with its latest victory a 7-0 win over Balclutha. It included Nikolai Molijn bagging three goals.
The Jeff Walker Old Boys team also kept a clean sheet on Saturday with its 4-0 win over Winton.
Thistle’s two teams also recorded wins on Saturday, while Queens Park and Gore Wanderers played out a 0-0 draw.
