Tribune shoutout….
Congratulations to those behind the creation of the new community art space in Invercargill that will be officially opened tomorrow (Jan 26).
The space at 34 Forth St has been named Whare Taupua – The Rest Room. Whare Taupua means a place of support and The Rest Room is a tip of the hat to the former use of the building which was originally opened in 1927.
It will be a place for community exhibitions, meetings, workshops, small gigs and performances, working artist space, rehearsals, storage, and more.
It’s a welcome addition to the Murihiku arts scene. There are some exciting things happening in the arts space and we’ll delve into it in a bit more in-depth at a later date.
Stories Elsewhere….
The Southland Express’ story on the once-described “Banksy of Invercargill”, written by reporter Ben Tommset, is an intriguing one. Actually, let’s not call him that, it’s a disservice to Bansky.
Here’s how the story goes. A graffiti “artist’s” signature, “Clap”, has popped up around Invercargill of late. It was met with disappointment from The Salvation Army who had its building tagged. But as Tommset’s story explains, “Clap”, under the cover of darkness, returned to cover up that tagging with something more impressive. (READ MORE HERE)
New Zealand hops are highly sought after by beer brewers around the world and it seems Southland is right in the think of it. Check out 1News reporter Jared McCulloch’s interesting story explaining the situation. (READ MORE HERE)
Why Southland is a gem…. Reason #1
(We think it’s worth reminding ourselves why Southland is such a special place, so that’s just what we are going to continue to do)
Teretonga Park…… In 1952 the Southland Sports Car Club had $400 in its bank when club members started discussions about building a purpose-built motorsport circuit at Sandy Point. Unbelievably the circuit those volunteers carved out in the 1950s has remained largely untouched (in terms of shape) - apart from a slight adjustment to the corner heading into the straight.
Given the logistics, planning, and rules now attached to developing a well-regarded international track, the Southland Car Club did a remarkable job when they first went about designing and building the Teretonga Park track in the 1950s.
The first race meeting was held on 30 November 1957. The first international event was held on 8 February 1958.
The 2.57km Teretonga Park circuit is New Zealand's oldest purpose-built race venue.
Close to 50 Formula 1 drivers have since competed at the track and nine Formula 1 World Champions.
If you love motorsport, Southland is the place to be.
