New trophy honours Southland rallying legend
A new trophy especially for members of the Central Otago Motorsport Club has been added to the trophies on offer when the MLT Barry Robinson Memorial Wyndham Rally takes place this Saturday.
The rally remembers the late Barry Robinson, a South Island rallying legend who originally farmed in the Mokoreta region near Wyndham, but who later in life moved to Earnscleugh near Alexandra.
Once living in Central Otago, Barry joined the Central Otago Motorsport Club and as a tribute to Robinson, Neil Whitford, who was a neighbour of Robinson’s in Central Otago, has made up a trophy utilising a steering wheel from Barry’s workshop.
The trophy will become an annual trophy for the highest-placed Central Otago Motorsport Club crew by class. It will be known as the Barry Robinson Memorial Challenge Trophy while the overall winner of the event will receive the Barry Robinson Memorial Trophy.
