Shaz Reece says: “Recently, some “elderly” gentlemen at the Invercargill City Council decided to enlighten us by regurgitating soundbites about why 16-year-olds shouldn’t be allowed to vote. Something about the “pReFrOnTaL cOrTex”. [No arguments] have made me so uncomfortable than 60 to 80-year-old men speaking in this way about a generation with experiences so far from their own.” (READ MORE HERE).

Stags prop switches to Wellington for NPC semifinal
The Southland Stags were represented in the 2023 NPC playoffs after all - sort of. In a unique twist, Stags tight-head prop Morgan Mitchell started for Wellington in its semifinal loss to Hawke’s Bay in Wellington on Saturday night. (READ MORE HERE).
Impressive world champs debut for Southland clay target shooter
Southland shooter Charliese Erskine is already targeting next year’s world championships after impressing on debut in the United States earlier this month. The SBS Bank Academy Southland Foundation Year athlete returned home with seven top 10 placings across her two major competitions. (READ MORE HERE).
Three vote against CEO's interim appointment
The Gore District Council voted nine-three in favour of having long-term CEO Steve Parry stay on in an interim role. Parry resigned last month and was due to finish on October 31. However, on Tuesday the council resolved to appoint Parry as interim chief executive during the recruitment of a new chief executive. (READ MORE HERE).
Contractors hit water as work on the Bluff boat ramp underway
Boaties keen to hit the water will soon have a new boat ramp to launch from with work getting underway at the Bluff wharf. This week, commercial diving and marine contracting company Sub Aqua Solutions was in the water, installing the piles that will support the new ramp and pontoons. (READ MORE HERE).

Invercargill City Council currently has seven active consultations asking the community for its thoughts on issues to do with parks and reserves. Donovan Park, Queens Park, Sandy Point are among the city spaces and places the council is asking the community to consider, with subjects ranging from a new swing set to what might happen in 50 years.
