Tribune Shoutout….
To all the motoring enthusiasts heading to Teretonga Park this weekend for the Classic SpeedFest - Enjoy.
A range of classic cars will race in a variety of classes, some of them like Craig Sawyer’s ex-Alan Boyle Vauxhall Viva, a car that graced our circuits nearly 50 years ago.
For those that saw the car in its heyday it is a walk down memory lane while for those who weren’t around 50 years ago it is a look at what the cars of that era were all about.
Alan Boyle built the Viva in the late 1960’s, early 1970’s and raced it from 1972 to 1974. In that time, it won a lot of races and would have appeared at Teretonga Park a few times says current owner, Craig Sawyer of Taupo. “The car is 70% original,” he says “with the same 2.3 litre Bedford engine, original suspension and diff plus a replica gearbox to original spec.”
Sawyer will race the car in the Historic & Vintage Racing Association class at SpeedFest where another car from the same era, Feilding driver Dennis McConnell’s ex-Halliday brothers Ford Escort, will also line up.

Why Southland is a gem…. Reason #17
(We think it’s worth reminding ourselves why Southland is such a special place, so that’s what we’ll do regularly)
Despite being closed to the public because it’s deemed earthquake-prone Invercargill’s Water Tower building remains a stunning gem.
There are few better sights on a nice clear night in Invercargill. It’s worth a visit and a photo.
