Why Southland is a gem…. Reason #19
(We think it’s worth reminding ourselves why Southland is such a special place, so that’s what we’ll do regularly)
Taramea Bay & Mitchells Bay. Both of these bays are located in Riverton. Taramea Bay, the stretch of beach between Howell's Point and the entrance of the Jacobs River Estuary, is a popular spot in the summer as it provides safe family swimming. A small section within the larger Taramea Bay, Mitchell's Bay is an excellent surf spot, with a great right hand point break that performs well at mid-tide.
The bays are also popular for water skiing, rowing, fishing and catching the occasional flounder. There are toilet and changing facilities and a great playground at Taramea Bay, plus interesting coastal walkways nearby.
Riverton is well known for dolphin spotting as they like to travel up into the estuary for feeding, so awe-inspiring close encounters in the bays are possible. (Blurb credit - Southland NZ).
