As the call for new board members goes out to the public, the Southland Business Chamber has paid tribute to outgoing board member and previous Chair Carla Forbes.
Forbes is the Chamber’s longest standing board member, and the Chamber has acknowledged her exceptional commitment to the growth and development of Invercargill and Southland businesses during her tenure.
Southland Business Chamber Board Chair Neil McAra said Forbes’ passion for supporting and promoting local businesses was unwavering.
“Carla is known for being outspoken and action focused. She has headed some outstanding advocacy and has ensured the voice of the business community has been heard and their needs met,” he said.
As director of marketing agency Naked Creative, Forbes used her resources and position there to support businesses and actioned some bold moves to support the community including leading the Standing Up for SIT campaign.

Tribune Shoutout #2….
Fiordland is rolling out the welcome mat to hundreds of adventure racers from around the world who are in Te Anau for the start of One New Zealand GODZONE Chapter 11 on Thursday.
“Events like GODZONE have a hugely positive impact on the region,” says Great South Conference & Events Manager Karen Witham. “Te Anau businesses will benefit, the streets are alive with adventure racers and their support crews, and the race is creating a real buzz in the town.”
Fiordland and Southland is the official host location for GODZONE Chapter 11, thanks to support from the Southland District Council and Southland Regional Development Agency Great South.
“We’re excited to share our world-class landscape, great walks and lakes with national and international GODZONE competitors over the next two weeks as the race travels through various parts of our stunning region,” says Witham.
“Events like this encourage vibrancy and celebrate diversity while playing a vital role in positioning Southland as the best place to live, work and play. Places such as Fiordland are becoming rare, so these events help us tell these stories.”
“We know GODZONE teams and race crews will appreciate the genuine warm southern hospitality this region is renowned for while experiencing our beautiful Fiordland national park and UNESCO world heritage area,” says Whitham.
GODZONE teams and their support crews have already arrived in Te Anau in preparation for the eight-day 580km expedition adventure's Thursday start (location soon to be announced).

Why Southland is a gem…. Reason #20
(We think it’s worth reminding ourselves why Southland is such a special place, so that’s what we’ll do regularly)
Anderson Park is located on the northern outskirts of Invercargill and is testament to the generous spirit of one of Invercargill's early prominent businessmen. The grand old homestead remains as a focal point of the park, surrounded by well-manicured gardens and mature trees.
Sir Robert Anderson bought a rather neglected 300-acre block in 1910, attracted by the 50 acres of native bush on the property. Starting off as a sheep farm, Anderson and his wife's passion for horticulture soon saw extensive flower gardens developing. They added the magnificent homestead in 1925, which was built in the Georgian style by Christchurch architect, Cecil Wood, at a cost of 10,000.
On November 22nd 1984 the house was registered as a historic place Category 1 with the Historic Places Trust. It was Andersons wish that on his and his wifes death, the house and grounds, including the block of native bush, be gifted to the city for use as a public park. Assessed as a serious earthquake risk, the homestead closed in January 2014, but the grounds and sheltered picnic areas remained open to the public. After eight years and heaps of strengthening and water-tightening work the Anderson House reopened to the public in November 2022. (Blub credit - Southland NZ)
