Help needed: Invercargill-Bluff highway in 'poor condition'
Invercargill deputy mayor Tom Campbell has expressed disappointment that the Government has committed $20 billion in funding roads of national significance, but none of that money is heading south. Of particular concern is the stretch of State Highway 1 between Invercargill to Bluff which Campbell said, “We would all accept it is in poor condition”. (READ MORE HERE).
Swede festival on its way
It’s time to celebrate the humble Southland swede. A unique new Rootstock Festival will be held in Southland in April. It’s an attempt to create a landmark event that, celebrates the agricultural heritage of Southland, showcases the province’s incredible produce, culinary creativity, and sense of humour. Another Ranfurly Shield-winning Stag enters coaching game
Southland’s 2009 Ranfurly Shield-winning hero Robbie Robinson has entered the coaching ranks. The Manawatu Turbos have confirmed Robinson will join them as an assistant coach for the 2024 NPC season. (READ MORE HERE).
Gore defers long-term plan; imposing annual budget looms
The Gore District Council has deferred its 10-year long-term plan with its CEO warning there is an imposing annual budget to work through instead. Gore was one of the first councils to lobby the Government to allow local authorities to do be able to defer the long-term process. (READ MORE HERE).
Busy tip off for talented Southland basketballer
It’s been a busy start to the year for Southland basketballer Maggie Manson. Two South Island camps and a trip to Melbourne for the world’s largest junior basketball event has made for a frenetic start to 2024 for the SBS Bank Academy Southland leadership year athlete. (READ MORE HERE).
Stags halfback ruled out for 12 months
The Southland Stags have been dealt a major blow six months out from the 2024 season with halfback Connor McLeod likely to be sidelined for 12 months. Scans have revealed McLeod has suffered an ACL injury which requires surgery. (READ MORE HERE).

Airport terminal naming: Plans to officially rename the Invercargill airport terminal in conjunction with former Invercargill mayor Sir Tim Shadbolt’s 77th birthday hasn’t eventuated.
