Spotlight on Southland Sport: Friday Edition
As part of today’s Spotlight on Sport, Southern Steel coach Reinga Bloxham explains how she personally dealt with losing star shooter George Fisher to injury in preseason. We also wish Clark Dermody all the best, point out a golf club milestone, and much more. (READ MORE HERE).
Launching our Super Rugby Pacific picks panel
Inside our Spotlight on Southland Sport; Friday Edition today is our first Super Rugby Pacific picks panel.
We’ve managed to assemble three of Southland rugby’s more astute rugby minds and have put them up against each as part of a picks panel for the 2023 Super Rugby Pacific season.
Scott Eade, Matt Saunders, and Jason Rutledge need little introduction. All three have played at the professional level but most importantly all three have and continue to be key figures in Southland rugby.
Good luck lads.
Stories Eslewhere….. (Farmgate milk price cut)
Not ideal folks. Fonterra has reduced and narrowed its 2022-23 forecast farmgate milk price range by 50c to $8.20-8.80/kg MS, with a midpoint of $8.50.
Given Southland is a key player in the dairy sector it’s worth taking notice even if you don’t directly work in the dairy industry.
Check out Farmers Weekly’s story for more details on Fonterra reducing its Farmgate milk price. (READ MORE HERE).

Why Southland is a gem…. Reason #22
(We think it’s worth reminding ourselves why Southland is such a special place, so that’s what we’ll do regularly)
Kiwi spotting. Spot a kiwi in its natural environment is a must-do activity when you're on Stewart Island. The Southern brown kiwi (Rakiura Tokoeka) outnumbers the locals on Stewart Island by a massive 50:1, which means there’s a good chance of seeing this mystical bird at night (and on the odd occasion, during the day). There are heaps of local guides to show you some exclusive spots and to teach you all about our national bird’s quirky personality and habits.
Out and About….
Civic Theatre Stage Sale - Saturday February 25 from 9am – 3pm. (Entry via stage door off Esk St)
Anyone wanting to get their hands on a piece of Invercargill theatre memorabilia or equipment will soon have the opportunity at the Civic Theatre’s first ever Stage Sale.
Up for grabs are items that are normally found on, above or backstage, such as theatrical lighting and sound equipment, props, office furniture, costumes, fabric and vintage clothing.
Invercargill City Council Manager Venues Richard McWha said there was a rich history of theatre and performance in Invercargill, and he was excited to share some of it with the community.
“There are a lot of things we no longer need or use, so instead of throwing them out, we’d rather divert them from landfill and encourage reuse and repurpose by passing it on to people and community organisations who can put it to use and cherish it.
“Opportunities like this don’t come around often and I’d encourage everyone to check out the sale. Who knows what gems could be found?”
There will be thousands of items available for sale all for varying prices, McWha said.
Other theatrical groups from Southland have also been invited to be involved in the sale, including Invercargill Musical Theatre, BDL Productions and Andrea Hows Artistry, which will also have items for sale.
In case you missed it….
Doors flung open: There’s been a sense of scepticism amongst reporters around the Invercargill City Council’s closed workshop meetings over the years. Although have we overplayed just what goes on in those meetings? It turns out the possible return of 1950s barrel organs gets raised. (READ MORE HERE)
Blood, sweat, tears: Invercargill filmmaker Matt Inns’ journey to getting a short-film accepted in a prestigious international film festival has taken a lot of graft and plenty of rejection. (READ MORE HERE)
