Tribune Shoutout #1…. (Golf celebrations & life memberships)
The Otautau Golf Club celebrated 100 years of the club over three days on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Included in the celebrations was a special moment when two of its club members were awarded life memberships. They were Judy Gimblett and Jim McDougall.
Grassroots non-profit organisations are built around people like Gimblett and McDougall.
Well done to Gimblett and McDougall, and well done to the Otautau Golf Club which has reached 100 years. It’s not an easy feat in amongst the growing challenges country sports clubs now have.
Tribune Shoutout #2… (The wasp hunter)
Geoff Scott, a well-known Southland beekeeper who hunts wasps, spoke to Southland District Council recently about the growing wasp problem in Otautau.
The Southland District Council went out and filmed him at work for what is an informative segment on how to interact with wasps.
It’s worth a watch.

Why Southland is a gem…. Reason #23
(We think it’s worth reminding ourselves why Southland is such a special place, so that’s what we’ll do regularly)
Trout Fishing. Few anglers can resist the lure - clear, clean rivers and streams teeming with trout ribbon the Southland region. Southland is a fishing paradise which attracts anglers from across the globe to its clear running, trout-laden rivers.
Under big skies and surrounded by awesome mountain ranges, you can escape all distractions as you cast for brown trout, rainbow trout and salmon.
The Mataura River is one of the best trout fishing rivers in the world. It has the highest population and catch rate of any river in New Zealand. It is also famous for its hatches and spinner falls.
When you consider the dozens of smaller rivers and streams, as well as the lakes, it’s not surprising Southland has the highest participation in angling per capita of any region in New Zealand. (Blurb credit: Southland NZ)
