Why Southland is a gem…. Reason #25
(We think it’s worth reminding ourselves why Southland is such a special place, so that’s what we’ll do regularly)
Bluff Hill Motupōhue. Bluff Hill provides spectacular views over Foveaux Strait and the Southland Plains, a well-established walking track network, a mountain bike park, a car park and interpretation panels. Original native forest, wind-battered coast and scrub-covered hillsides are some of the delights of the area.
While walking is the main recreational pursuit on Bluff Hill, downhill mountain biking is also gaining popularity. (Blurb credit: Southland NZ).

Poppy Places: Unveiling Scully Place - Friday, March 3, 11am
Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for ‘conspicuous gallantry and initiative’, Peter Scully DCM was killed in action at Le Quesnoy on the 5th of November 1918 - during NZ action to liberate the town.
The Invercargill City Council, alongside Scully’s family and RNZRSA National President Sir Wayne ‘Buck’ Shelford will on Friday unveil Invercargill’s newest Poppy Place of Remembrance, Scully Place, to commemorate Scully.
The Places of Remembrance project is about ensuring we never forget. It is about a place where our heroes' contributions and their stories are linked to the physical via the simple placement of a poppy.
Poppy Places is the naming of New Zealand streets or places after people who fought in the world wars and commemorating it with a red poppy on the street sign to ensure the people who fought are never forgotten.
By using the Poppy (an internationally known symbol) to mark these places, those that pass by will see the Poppy and be reminded every time of ANZAC.
Correction: In yesterday’s Tribune email newsletter it was stated Southland’s Heritage Month Opening event at the Civic Theatre was being held tonight (Wednesday). In fact, it is being held on Friday at 5pm. We apologise for the mistake.
