Why Southland is a gem…. Reason #26
(We think it’s worth reminding ourselves why Southland is such a special place, so that’s what we’ll do regularly)
The Bluff Oyster. Yet another Bluff Oyster season got underway yesterday with the boats out first thing ready to feed those craving the delicacy.
Bluff oysters are reputed to be the best in the world and New Zealand’s national treasure. These delicate and succulent shellfish are dredged along the coastlines of Southland between March and August every year.
Originating in the pristine, cool waters of the Foveaux Strait, one of the few natural oyster beds in the world, Bluff oysters are known for their unique flavour that is loved around the globe.
Out and About….
Riverton Trotting Club meeting at Winton - Friday, March 3
The Riverton Trotting Club will host their second and final meeting of the 2022/2023 season at Central Southland Raceway in Winton on Friday.
The meeting is a twilight event with a 3.17pm start, an ideal opportunity to end the week early and come racing plus enjoy a fundraising BBQ for your evening meal.
The day will feature the DT King’s Transport Riverton Cup, the Southern Standardbred Breeders Assn Southern Belle Series Heat, the Dunstan Horsefeeds Gold Chip Final Handicap Trot plus the Riverton Butchery Handicap Trot in a 10-race programme.
There will be prizes for the kids on course plus between 5 and 6pm a charity BBQ with the proceeds going to Team Teal – an annual fundraising campaign carried out by Harness Racing New Zealand to raise awareness and funds for ovarian cancer research. Admission is free.
