Out & About….
Thieves Alley Market - Bluff - Saturday, March 25
Bluff’s monthly Thieves Alley Market continues to thrive and the March edition of the event is on this Saturday (March 25).
Another range of stalls has been assembled for the day with vendors such as Karen Auckram’s Te Whenua Me Te Wairua range of herbal medicines, remedies, teas, balms, oils and more. Fugly Plants return while the designer of the new Welcome To Bluff sign will also have some work on hand. As always there will be a steampunk theme plus music, the Bluff Hot Dog Cart, which is under new ownership, and good coffee.
The unique market takes place each month from 10am and 2pm in the cosy confines of the alley next to The Eagle Pub & Hotel at 134 Gore Street.
If you are arriving from outside of Bluff just drive on down SH1 and keep an eye out for the steampunk trike advertising the market as your marker for the alley.
The market is outdoors and will be weather-dependant.
Why Southland is a gem…. Reason #39
(We think it’s worth reminding ourselves why Southland is such a special place, so that’s what we’ll do regularly)
Switzers Waikaia Museum. The nucleus of the collection held by Switzers Waikaia Museum was brought together for Waikaia’s 125th Centennial Jubilee.
It has grown to around 2200 generalised social history objects including material relative to high country farming and the area’s gold mining past and associated Chinese settlement.
The museum also holds 2800 bottles - not including the 20,000 bottles that have been used in the construction of a bottle house attached to the museum - and original documents and photographs relative to the area.
Waikaia owes much of its history to gold which was discovered here in 1862. At the peak of the rush Switzers (the town of Waikaia's original name) had a population of around 2,000 including a large number of Chinese miners. The museum proudly display’s this heritage.
The museum is open daily from 11am to 4pm from Labour Weekend to Easter. Winter hours are Saturday and Sunday from 1-3pm from Easter to Labour Weekend.
