Tribune Shoutout…. (Southland film success)
There’s bound to be some pretty pumped Southland film enthusiasts on the back of a pretty special triumph.
The Ballad of Maddog Quinn - directed by Southland’s Matt Inns - has picked up the award for Best International Short Film at the Madeira Fantastic Filmfest in Portugal.
The short film was previously accepted for the prestigious Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival, held in Sitges, Spain.
It has been described as a “steampunk western” and was largely shot in Tekapo with plenty of Southland involvement.
A short synopsis of the 15-minute film says: “An unlikely outlaw wreaks hell across the dusty dystopia of The State on a wild quest to save what is held most dear.”
The first New Zealand screening was held in February at Centrestage in Invercargill.
On top the Best International Short Film recognition Steven Woller picked up the Best Production Design for his work on The Ballad of Maddog Quinn, and Frank Rueter the Best Visual Effects award.
As part of a profile piece on Matt Inns published by the Tribune in February, Inns said as a filmmaker there was plenty of rejection to work through in terms of the quest to crack film festivals.
“For example, with Maddog, we had applied to quite a few festivals, lower ones that we didn’t get into.
“I’m thinking, ‘we’re not going to get in anywhere’, and then you get into the one you really want to [Sitges]. You never quite know.
“It’s a mental game because your rate of rejection is probably 90 percent.”

Neive Strang [Band] Living in Two - Saturday, 8pm - Southland Musicians Club
Anyone who experienced Neive Strang and band live at last year's Going Global showcase or caught them on their I am the Ribbon Tour, will be aware the Ōtepoti songwriter is a rising talent who commands attention. In fact, she was invited by Shayne P. Carter to be a member of Dimmer's recent touring band.
With two EPs and a mini-album already out in the world, Strang moves into her next phase with new single and video combo Living in Two, out now along with news of an eight-date, nationwide launch tour tucked into the weekends of March and April.
Recorded with SJD (Sean Donnelly) producing, and Strang's band - guitarist Jack Wing, drummer Benny Holloway, bassist Oliver Robson and keyboardist/percussionist Jesse Semple - Living in Two is a dream-pop/alt-country, slo-mo strummer showcasing the artist's soulful vocal skills, given visual life by Bailey Gardner and Matilda Macandrew, who worked together on directing, cinematography, editing and story duties.
Feeling like a hazy summer vision that careens into the carnivalesque, hit play on Living in Two made with support from NZ On Air and don't miss Strang with band at the following dates... Chris Cudby, undertheradar. [Blurb credit - Southland nz]
Why Southland is a gem…. Reason #40
(We think it’s worth reminding ourselves why Southland is such a special place, so that’s what we’ll do regularly)
Invercargill Golf Club. Established in the early 1900’s, Invercargill Golf Club’s course at Otatara is a favoritie for many in the New Zealand golfing scene.
Undulating terrain, tree lined fairways and well bunkered greens are features of the championship course.
The course played host the the SBS Invitational (a 72-hole amateur stroke play championship) between 1977 and 2012 involving representatives from 15 golf associations in New Zealand.
Frank Nobilo, Craig Perks, Michael Campbell, and Ryan Fox have all competed in this tournament before turning pro.
The NZ Open has previously been played at the course, including in 1960 in a field that featured Sir Bob Charles with the tournament won by Australia's Peter Thomson.
Have you been able to tame Otatara’s piece of golfing paradise?
